Types of Processing

There are various types of processing, ranging widely from machining to heat treatment.

Machining

  • 旋盤加工

    Lathe Machining

    (General-purpose lathes, NC lathes, etc.)

  • 穴開け加工

    Drilling

    (Machining Center processing, etc.)

  • 鍛造

    Forging

    (Free forging, roll forging, etc.)

  • 鋳造

    Casting

    (Sand casting, lost wax, etc.)

Heat Treatment

  • Quenching and Tempering

    Typical heat treatments for “hardening.”
After heating the steel to a high temperature, it is rapidly cooled by plunging it all at once into water or oil (quenching). Because it becomes more prone to cracking as it gets harder, it is heated again at a lower temperature (tempering) to regain toughness. Widely used for parts requiring both hardness and strength, such as blades and gears.

    Quenching: Around 800 – 900°C
    Tempering: 150 – 650°C (Depending on application)

  • Annealing

    A heat treatment for “softening.”
After heating to a high temperature, it is slowly cooled over time inside a furnace. This relieves the strain and hardness accumulated inside the steel, making it easier to process (bend, cut, etc.). It is a treatment often used as “preparation” to condition the material.

    Heating temperature: Around 750 – 900°C
Cooling method: Slow cooling inside a furnace

  • Normalizing

A heat treatment for “eliminating unevenness.”
After heating to a high temperature, it is removed from the furnace and slowly cooled in the air. It resets the variations in structure caused by processing such as forging and rolling, regulating the quality uniformly. It is easy to handle without requiring special equipment, and is widely utilized to stabilize the quality of structural steel materials.

    Heating temperature: Around 850 – 950°C
Cooling method: Natural cooling in the atmosphere

  • Solution Annealing (Solution Heat Treatment)

A heat treatment for “restoring rust resistance.”
By heating to a high temperature, alloy components (such as chromium) contained in the iron are uniformly dissolved, followed by rapid cooling. It restores the corrosion resistance of stainless steel that was damaged by processing such as welding. Widely used for equipment in the food, medical, and chemical fields.

    Heating temperature: Around 1,010 – 1,150°C
Cooling method: Rapid cooling by water or air
